Who is The Head of the Church?
Let’s see what the Bible says;
“For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.” Ephesians 5:23
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Col 1:13-18
Jesus made it Very Clear to Peter who the Church Belongs to
“And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:17-18
The Holy Ghost, is, after all, the Teacher of Truth.
When John the Baptist saw Jesus, this is what he said;
“And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.” John 1:32
“But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him” 1John 2:27
“He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven” Matthew 16: 15-17
Jesus plainly told Peter that no man had taught him the truth of who He is, but that God the Father Himself had revealed this truth to Peter!
Is that how it is with you? Or do you just blindly follow what your teachers are preaching to you without diligently seeking the Lord by prayer and searching in His word whether these things are so?
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11
My Testimony of How God got My Attention
I remember when I was just 19 years old in 1980. During the months of January, February, and March, God was dealing with me by his Spirit, and was teaching me some truths. All this took place before I got saved, which was in March.
To this day I can remember how often the Spirit of God would check me when I would say a curse word. I would say a curse word and immediately it would be like God was looking at me and saying, “Uh uh, do not say that.”
It was so strange, but I actually stopped cursing before I got saved because of this.
I also remember being with my friends in a restaurant a few weeks before i got saved and they were all ordering beer or wine to drink. And I thought to myself, I do not want to get drunk, that is wrong. At that moment the Spirit spoke to me and said, “Why drink a little of something that will eventually make you drunk, which would be wrong?”
The point of this is not to convince you of the rightness or wrongness of drinking alcohol or cursing, but to show that it is the Spirit of God that is the teacher of truth, and not man.
To this day, forty years later I have not one time cursed or had a drink of alcohol, why? Because God Himself showed me it was wrong. And No matter who else will try to convince me otherwise, they will never do it because I have been taught by God already and will never move away from what He showed me.
The lesson is that once God shows you something, stand on it forever! No matter who says what. Be it a Pastor, Minister, or even the Pope. Never cross or disobey something God has shown YOU. Amen.
Sadly, not all people have this backbone and are easily swayed by what other influential ministers teach, as we see in this example from the book of Galatians.
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Gal 1:6-9
Following Jesus who Never Fails!
I thank God He taught me a LONG time ago to follow HIM and not men. Sadly, that is not the case with most who call themselves children of God, they are easily swayed by the last speaker, or if a new Pastor is installed.
The Apostle Paul had some advice to the brethren about Gods flock of sheep, and what would soon happen to them.
“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
Also, of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them” Acts 20:28-30
Have you ever experienced what Paul is here speaking about?
This can especially happen when a Pastor dies and another minister is put in his place. That new minister, instead of taking care of the sheep, starts beating them!
Do not forget what God has shown you about the church and what it is supposed to be.
Looking unto Jesus
This was the title of the very last message my former and late Pastor preached, “Looking unto Jesus.”
It turns out it was spot on, and very good advice for all of us because of the great turmoil we were all about to go thru!
Conclusion: Who is the Head of Your Church?
As we have shown by scripture, Jesus is clearly the Head of the church, and His Spirit is the teacher of all truth.
Are you standing with Jesus and His Spirit, or has another man come on the scene who has influenced you to follow another gospel?
May the Lord help us to have that good ground where Jesus says are the people with a good and an honest heart. Humility will help us to stay on the right path and not stray.
I pray God will bless you and help you to get a closer walk with the Lord!
