So today I am trying to find some scriptures about Self Righteousness in the Bible.
In Romans the 10th chapter, it says this;
“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” Romans 10:1-4
In a nutshell self righteousness is doing or believing something that is not required by God which tends to make the person feel a moral or spiritual superiority over others.
This is exactly what the Jews were doing in Pauls day. The Law of Moses was no longer required to be followed by Gods children,
instead, because of Jesus sacrifice, today we exercise our faith in Jesus work at the cross and His Grace and Truth motivated by our Love for God and our neighbor.
Paul says that the Jews were ignorant of God’s righteousness and were going about trying to establish their own righteousness.
A big mistake that many still make today.
It is impossible for us to be righteous outside of the Grace of our Lord Jesus.
John 15 says that without Jesus we can do NOTHING. HE is the Vine, we are the branches. The same way a branch that is producing purple grapes needs and draws its life from the vine is the same way we as Christians draw all of our strength from Jesus every day.
Experience With a Jehovah Witness
Just yesterday I was online in a religious forum speaking with one of my Jehovah Witnesses friends.
They told me that I was not 100% obeying God or trusting God if I went to the polls and voted on election day.
Her belief that it is wrong to vote is not found in the Bible, but she has convinced herself that it somehow is in the bible, and therefore must be obeyed.
By her basically adding to the Word of God, and then following thru and believing and practicing something that is not required by God, automatically produces a holier than thou attitude which reeks of pride in the sight of God and man.
In her attempt to do something she thought would please God, she ended up displeasing Him.
And that is exactly what self righteousness will do to a person every time.
You cannot add to the Word of God and please God by so doing.
What is Self Righteousness? – A Definition
From Wikipedia Self Righteousness;
“Self-righteousness (also called sanctimoniousness, sententiousness, and holier-than-thou attitudes) is a feeling or display of (usually smug) moral superiority derived from a sense that one’s beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue than those of the average person.
Self-righteous individuals are often intolerant of the opinions and behaviors of others.”
That last clause is what I would like to discuss. “Self-righteous individuals are often intolerant of the opinions and behaviors of others.”
How Does a Self Righteous Person Act?
A self-righteous person passes judgment on others more often than they do upon their own selves. Even though they know they too have faults and sins, for some reason they want to scrutinize everyone else, perhaps hoping that will somehow make their faults and sins less evil than the person they are scrutinizing.
Many times just by looking at a persons facial expressions one can detect arrogance, or self righteousness.
I recall a christian comedian once tell a story about how he had started a fight with his brother when they were younger.
He said he was in the kitchen when his older brother came up to him, with, “a look on his face that said, I need to be slapped.” So, what could I do? So, I slapped him!
The bible refers to people who have a “proud look” on their face. I am sure you have seen it. Shockingly, the Bible also says that God Hates it!
“These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” Prov 6:16-19
It is best to be humble my friend. We will never please God by having a self-righteous attitude towards others.
What Does the Lord Require?
” He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” Micah 6:8
It is best to walk humbly with God.
