In John 14:15, Jesus speaks these words to His disciples, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”
It would be a very logical conclusion to say that based on Jesus teaching here that it is also true that if we are not keeping His commandments, then we do not Love Jesus.
The Importance of Keeping Gods Commandments
I always find it strange when I hear people saying that obeying God is legalistic. Huh?
Obeying God is an absolute REQUIREMENT if you are to actually LOVE God, according to the words of Jesus.
Here is Jesus again in John 14;
23 “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.”
I think that this passage is so clear that it needs no explanation.
Also in John 15 Jesus tells us to Abide in Him;
4 “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”
How do we Abide in Jesus? John 15:10 tells us;
“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.”
The way we abide in Jesus is by keeping His commandments. Seems pretty important to me.
Let’s see how David Expressed His Love to God
This is Psalm 18;
20The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
21For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.
23I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.
24Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
25With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright”
God Always Has a People
Sometimes we may wonder where are all the children of God? Because we do not know these people does not mean God does not have a people.
Even in Elijahs day, Elijah thought he was the only one left serving God, But in 1Kings 19.18 it says;
“Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.”
God always honors those who honor Him. Our obedience to God is not an option, it is a requirement if we want to have Gods favor and end up with Him one day in his Holy Heaven.
Conclusion; Love God and Obey Him
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
King Solomon had it right. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
And in the end, we will have lived a life pleasing to God!
