Have We Found This Rest?
A Sabbath of Rest
What is the Sabbath?
In Old Testament Israel, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. The 4th commandment said this in Exodus 20:
8Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
The Gospel Day Sabbath, or Rest
It is clear that Paul is comparing the Old Testament Sabbath rest, (the literal day of rest on Saturday) with the rest found in believing in Jesus here in Hebrews the 4th chapter.
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
5And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.
6Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
7Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
8For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
9There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
10For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
For We Which have Believed do Enter into Rest
In Verse 3 of Hebrews 4, Paul says that when we believe, we enter into rest.
Well, in verse two it says, “For unto us was the gospel preached”
So the proper context would be that the moment we believe the Gospel, we enter into Rest!
Rest for our soul! Forgiveness of sins always makes the soul happy, peaceful, and at Rest!
Thank God for Jesus and the Gospel!
When we believe the gospel of Jesus Christ and apply it to our lives, we find true forgiveness of sins from God and a deep peace in our souls.
Our souls have found the rest that is sought for. A glorious relationship with Jesus Christ!
We are no longer bound by a day to observe a literal Sabbath.
By believing the Gospel we enter into the Rest that God wanted us to have all along!
